The 5th International Symposium of The Japanese Society of Fish Pathology

Comparative Virology of Amphibians, Reptiles and Fish:
The 6th International Symposium on Viruses of Lower Vertebrates
    Hakodate, Hokkaido, Japan
    September 19th - 22nd, 2004

Five times of the International Symposium on Viruses of Lower Vertebrates (ISVLV) held in Munich, Germany (1988), in Corvallis, USA (1991), in Jouy-en-Josas, France (1995), in Weymouth, England (1998) and in Seattle, USA (2002). During this period, studies on individual viruses of lower vertebrates have yielded substantial insights into important features of their biology. Especially, their molecular virological features provided with rapid progress of molecular biological techniques have conducted lots of novel prospects to us. The main purposes of the 6th ISVLV is to provide ample opportunity for discussions to bridge from the accumulating insights on molecular virology onto applied and environmental virology of lower vertebrates. We hope a lot of spirited virologists will join to the 6th ISVLV, which will be held in Hakodate, Hokkaido, Japan. The event will give scientists interested in viruses of amphibians, reptiles and fish the opportunity to discuss recent research findings in a fruitful, friendly atmosphere. The scientific program will include sessions on pathogenesis, immunity, structural biology, molecular biology, virus evolution and emerging viruses of lower vertebrates.
Sincerely yours,

Scope
The society aims to advance the study of fish pathology and the dissemination of knowledge specific to fish and shellfish diseases. This is promoted through its annual meetings and symposia; supported by the publication of its internationally renowned official society journal "Fish Pathology". The activities of the society cover a wide spectrum of basic and applied fish pathology, providing privileged information to fish pathologists worldwide.

Brief history
1966: The Japanese Society of Fish Pathology (formerly The Japan Research Group of Fish Pathology) was founded, and started issuing the quarterly academic journal "Fish Pathology". This journal is the oldest of its kind and keeps providing many significant and important data on fish diseases of the world.
1978: The first international symposium on fish pathology was held in Tokyo, following which three symposia were held in Tokyo and Hiroshima.
2003: Fish Pathology, volume 38 has been issued.

Recent symposia
The Society committee also holds national symposia on a regular basis, dealing with topics of fish and shellfish pathology.
1999: New diseases of shellfishes (Sendai).
2001: Development of fish vaccines in Japan (Tokyo).

Future subjects
1. Fish farming officer corresponding with HACCP and fish disease.
2. Supply of fish with high quality and safety to consumers.
